Former Senator: Trump may invoke emergency powers to subvert the election

A former senator outlines exactly how Trump could hold on to the presidency despite losing the election. Then, he suggests what to do about it today.

A former senator is sending a clear warning to Americans and Nancy Pelosi that Trump may be preparing to subvert the 2020 election. Thus, he could hold on to the presidency while losing the election. Is it possible, even though he’s now the worst-polling incumbent in three decades?

Timothy E. Wirth, a former U.S. senator from Colorado and Tom Rogers of Newsweek, laid out the corrupt strategy. Unfortunately, it’s all-too-believable, considering Trump has already claimed the election will be rigged on Twitter.

On June 22, Trump tweeted:

The Plot Against America

Wirth, echoing the plot of HBO’s The Plot Against America, shows the steps Trump will take to “grab control of the United States government using emergency powers that no one could foresee.”

Here’s a brief summary, with much more detail at Newsweek:

If Biden wins by small margins in swing states, Trump will claim “election hacking.” Then, he’ll claim China interfered in the election and invoke emergency powers. Backed by AG Barr, a DOJ investigation will ensure, meant to delay the results and push the contested vote to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court could rule that the Electoral College must meet and vote, even without the electors from the contested swing states. Thus, there is no clear majority for Biden or Trump, and it gets pushed to the House of Representatives state delegation. With a likely 26 to 24 delegation majority, Republicans would hand Trump the presidency.

Does this sound like something Trump would do? Well, it did to his former National Security Advisor, John Bolton.

“Donald Trump will pay any price, make any deal, bend any rule, to assure his, own survival and success,” wrote Bolton.

The “People’s Firewall”

So, what is to be done about it? Wirth calls on Nancy Pelosi to take action now, and ensure the “people’s firewall” prevents Trump from undermining the election.

“Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker, should immediately ask the Judiciary, Commerce, Armed Services and Intelligence Committees to hold hearings on how steps can be taken to safeguard against this scenario, especially how to confront any invocation of emergency powers by the president.”

Ultimately, the people have to start now in sending the loud message that we will not tolerate this scenario. Plus, we must turn out and ensure Trump loses the election in a historic landslide. Doing so will send the message to the world that Americans reject Trumpism and all that it represents.
